Obituary of Frederick "Fred" Gladding
GLADDING, Frederick “Fred”, D.F.C. - Formerly of St. Thomas, passed away at his residence, Telfer Place, Paris, Ontario on Sunday, June 6, 2021, in his 99th year. Beloved husband for 69 years to the late Alice (née Wereley) Gladding (2019). Dearly loved father of Fred Gladding (Patricia) of Paris, and Mark Gladding (Jennifer) of Fort Erie. Dear brother of the late Horace Gladding (late June), and the late Audrey Barber (Ted of London). Also survived by 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Stratford, ON, June 5, 1923, he was a son of the late Edmund Horace and Lillian (née House) Gladding. After a 40 year career at Canadian Timken Ltd., Fred retired as Plant Manager of Industrial Engineering. He was a member of the former Trinity Anglican Church, St. Thomas where he served in many roles including as a Parish Warden. Fred was an avid golfer and member of Talbot Park and Belmont golf clubs. He loved curling and served as the President of the Senior Men’s Social & Curling League at the St. Thomas Curling Club. During the Second World War, Fred was a Navigator with the RCAF, serving first in 415 Squadron and then was transferred into 405 Squadron and The Pathfinder Force of the RAF; he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his exemplary service. A private family visitation and funeral service will be held at the Old St. Thomas Church, Walnut Street, St. Thomas, followed by interment in the Churchyard. As per the directive of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO), attendance numbers will be restricted, and a properly worn mask or face covering is required in the church and at the cemetery. Memorial donations to World Vision or the Old St. Thomas Church Restoration and Maintenance Trust will be gratefully acknowledged.
