John was a great positive influence in the lives of many young musicians (including me) in the St Thomas scene.
He was always patient and spoke common sense to the young crowd who would frequent his store. He always represented strong moral values and a respect for hard work. I learned a lot from him about respect and responsibility and was fortunate enough to work at the store part time to pay for my instruments that he would let me work off in trade.
Thanks John for being such a role model, you will be missed by many.

John was at the heart of our music community. He always was ready for a good chat and he, along with his family, made everyone feel welcome. John was a reliable source of encouragement for everyone wanting to explore their musical talent and his legend will continue with the countless memories people will continue share.
My heartfelt condolences to Susan, Tanya, Mike, and Josh.

John is someone that I always held a high regard for l remember , in my youth he would talk to me not has a young boy but as a friend .I remember many discussions about the music he played on weekends with his band The Maestro's in the early 70s. I loved fact that he played the organ on Sundays and then we would talk about the new Deep Purple song the band performed the night before. John to me was always a true gentleman with a strong faith and always a welcoming smile , a true st thomas icon.

To the Pountney family
I’m sorry for your loss. I hope that knowing that you will see him again will give you peace and comfort. When I joined the church John was teaching the investigator class and being in his class gave me a good start. I loved his playing “Come, Come Ye Saints” at the beginning of sacrament meeting. He will be missed. Pat Trudel

To the Pountney family: My sisters and I spent many hours taking piano lessons at Maestro's. I always loved popping in to speak to John or purchase items that I needed. After graduating high school, I did work for John teaching piano for a little while. He was a joy to work for! He made an impact on music in our community. Rest in peace, John. Until we meet again.

My sincere sympathy for your loss. As I read the reference to Ettore’s, I was flooded with additional memories of encouraging, entertaining piano lessons. I recall John discussing his new business name of “Maestro Music Academy” where the “proof of teaching was in the playing.” I worked as a teacher at Maestros for many years and enjoyed John’s confidence building encouragement. He has always been a significant influence in my life and I will miss him profoundly. I aspire to enrich the lives of my students as I carry forward the light and the joy that he continuously inspired. What an extraordinary beloved mentor and friend. His legacy will go forward! He will always be remembered!

I’m so happy you brought him to see me when I was there this summer! He was my amazing seminary teacher, musical instrument advisor when looking for gifts for Tony, a comedian, ice-cream loving, dignified, loving, patient and spiritual giant. I’ve known him almost my entire life I feel blessed to have done so. My sincerest sympathies go out to all of you who loved and were so loved by him. Until we meet again. Love, Jill
