Obituary of Alfred R. "Alf" Elsom

Of St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, in his 85th year.  Beloved husband of the late Mary (née Willoughby) Elsom (2016).  Father of Lynne Riddell (Carrie) of St. Thomas, and Barb Elsom (Su Morrow) of Cobourg.  Grandfather of Alex Riddell (Rachel) and Mike Riddell (Molly).  Great grandfather of William, Cécile, Adèle, and Maeve. Brother of the late Donna Ellis.  Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and their families. 

Born in Sarnia, ON, April 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Roy and Ruth (née Nickels) Elsom.  Alf was a retired employee of the Ford Motor Company of Canada’s St. Thomas Assembly Plant.  He was a former long- standing member of the Locke’s Community Club, and a long-time member and supporter of the North America Railway Hall of Fame and the CASO Station, St. Thomas. 

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.  A service to celebrate Alf’s life will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Saturday, October 28th at 1:00 p.m.  Relatives and friends will be received by the family from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m.  Private inurnment in Elmdale Memorial Park.  Flowers respectfully declined.  If so desired, memorial donations to the North America Railway Hall of Fame (CASO Restoration Project), Hospice of Elgin or the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
