My deepest condolences to the Beavis family. May God bless you.
During the 1970s, as secretary to the display advertising manager, Dawson Winchester, my duties allowed me to work closely with Laurie. Decisions were made and deadlines were met as I dummied the next edition. Laurie provided a learning curve for many on staff, and many careers benefitted from his expertise. Some did not discover that until later! My fondest, happiest memories of Laurie and my experiences at the Times-Journal are filed safely in my heart of hearts, and labelled "My Glory Days".

In the early summer of 1967 a young man searching for his path in life replied to a Help Wanted ad in the T-J seeking a "cub" reporter. Having no journalism background this young man applied and was surprised to receive an interview and even more surprised to receive a job offer. Forty years later that man, no longer young, retired from a journalism career that included news reporting, sports writing, lifestyle writing and a variety of editors positions. Thank you Laurie for taking that chance hiring.

I am forever grateful to Mr. Beavis for hiring me as his managing editor in 1989. He was far ahead of his time in knowing the value of local news to the community. I remember having a “robust” discussion with him regarding the T-J’s coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was puzzled because I knew his military background and couldn’t figure out why he didn’t want the story on Page One. I realized later that he was just teaching me how to stand up for myself (it was my first Managing Editor job). I learned a lot from him about how to put out a product we could all be proud of. At the time of his retirement, I had left Thomson Newspapers and was grateful that he invited me to his retirement dinner (even though he laughingly referred to me as “the enemy” in his comments). He was a fine man and a wonderful mentor.

My condolences to your family. Mr. Beavis was a wonderful man to deal with both professionally and personally. He was a great source of stories and support for a rookie reporter at her first stint at a daily newspaper. And it didn't hurt that we shared the same first name. We will all miss him.

I was grateful to work for Laurie, albeit briefly, during what was still the heyday of the Times-Journal. His views on community-focused journalism were influential for me and no doubt many other journalists.
