Obituary of Douglas Carlisle "Doug" Jones
Of RR1, Port Stanley, ON (Boxall), age 93, walked peacefully into the sunset on January 18, 2022, to rejoin his late wife of 68 years, Hilda (née Killam) Jones (September 6, 2021). Born February 7, 1928, in Boxall, ON, son of Lloyd and Bertha (née Clarke) Jones. Dearly loved father of Dale Jones, Cynthia Jones, Lorrie Futcher (Jay), and Jackie McCoubrey (John). Cherished grandfather of (12): Nicole Latka (Rob), Richard Jones (Christina), Christina Sanchez-Jones (Levi), Jody Di Trolio (Frank), Jennifer Belliveau (Craig), James Husband (Tanya Jubenville), Brooke Schurch (Marcel), Becky Kloostra (Gerald), Laurel Damman (Chris), Janelle McCoubrey, Maeghan McCoubrey (Steve Goodhue), and Julie McCoubrey (Joe Vanoverbeke). He is also survived by 17 great grandchildren, in-laws, Rose Jones and Bruce Killam, many nieces, nephews, and their families. In addition to his parents and wife, Doug was predeceased by great granddaughter, Katie Kloostra, sister, Eleanor DuChene MacKenzie, brothers, MacLean “Mac” Jones and Paul Jones, and in-laws, Fred DuChene, Doug MacKenzie, Lenore Jones, Lillian and Archie Westgate.
The ultimate family man, Doug was known for his courageous spirit, his ability to handle whatever life threw at him, and his love of playful jokes and seeking out adventures. He was deeply committed to his family and community, but also to farming, creating and growing the family business, and participating in politics alongside the love of his life, Hilda. He was the self-proclaimed Mayor of Boxall and on occasion, ‘one old grouch!’ He began his life as a farmer and raised dairy cattle and grew cash crops alongside his brother Paul, as one half of the D&P Jones venture. In 1970, Doug and Paul co-founded Fingal Farm Supply in Fingal, ON under the leadership of Hilda Jones. When he was not serving customers at the family business or out checking on the crops, he could be found either in his motorhome, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing his harmonica, or in recent days, spending time with his cat Lucky who kept him company while mourning the passing of his “Hildy.” Doug had a strong will to live, and to live life to its very fullest. Hilda and Doug spent many years together travelling throughout North America in their motorhome. “Mudflap,” as he was lovingly called by Hilda and close family, has left his family with fond memories of adventures and the satisfaction of knowing that his life had great purpose and was a life well-lived.
By invitation, a private family visitation will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160). Due to Provincial COVID-19 restrictions, a properly worn mask is required, physical distancing will be followed, and attendance numbers will be limited. A private graveside service, also by invitation, will be held at Hunter Cemetery, Lake Line, Southwold Twp. at a later date. Flowers respectfully declined. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed.
A big thank-you to all of Doug’s caregivers (PSW’s, Holly Lunn, Laurie Sunderland, Christine Hopper, Chantal Welch, and Kim Lunn RN) who helped Doug realize his dream of leaving the world in the same room that he entered it (Douglas was born in the home he resided in at the time of his passing).
