Obituary of Margaret S. Vogan (nee Van Horne) (Austin)
VOGAN, Mrs. Margaret S. (née Van Horne) (Austin), of St. Thomas, passed away at Caressant Care on Mary Bucke on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, in her 101st year. Beloved wife of the late Frederick W. Austin (1952) and the late Grenville H. Vogan (1995) (retired principal of Elmdale Public School, St. Thomas). She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. Special loving friends, John and Gail Irvine of Cambridge will especially miss Margaret, as will Pat Mellor and family of St. Thomas. Born in St. Thomas, ON, May 14, 1917, she was the youngest daughter of the late William and Edith (née Allan) Van Horne, and the sister of the late Jean F. Van Horne, late Melvin J. Van Horne (late Pearl), and the late Clive H. Van Horne (late Eleanor). A graduate of the London Normal School, Margaret taught for 35 years at rural schools in Elgin County, and at Elmdale and Wellington in St. Thomas, retiring from New Sarum in 1973. Margaret and her husband Gren enjoyed many years of travel to the English Isles, Western Europe and throughout North America. She was a long-time member of Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas, where she was a valued member of the choir for over 80 years, serving in a variety of administration positions. The funeral and committal service will be held at the SIFTON FUNERAL HOME, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Friday, December 1st at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be made privately in Union Cemetery. Relatives and friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday afternoon, November 30th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Flowers respectfully declined. Memorial donations to Knox Presbyterian Church or the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
