Obituary of Gladys V. Simpson (nee Hewson)

SIMPSON, Gladys V. (née Hewson) - of Caressant Care Mary Bucke, St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Monday, October 26, 2020, in her 104^th year.  Beloved wife of the late Thomas Edward “Ted” Simpson (1985).  Dearly loved mother of Joyce Matthews, and Thomas E. “Tom” Simpson (Patricia), all of St. Thomas.  Dear sister of Martin Hewson of Dunchurch, ON.  Also lovingly remembered by 8 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families.  Born in St. Thomas, January 2, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Margaret (née Flumerfelt) Hewson.  In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was predeceased by a great-grandson, Michael Robertson, two brothers, John and Archie Hewson, and two sisters, Muriel Dowson and Iva Hewson.  She was a retired employee of Consolidated-Bathurst Ltd. and a former employee of Kresge’s Ltd., St. Thomas.  Gladys was a former active member and served on the Board of Directors of the St. Thomas Seniors’ Centre and the Seniors’ Centre at the Valleyview Home for the Aged (former Elysian St. site).  She was an active bridge player for many years.  Gladys was a former member of the St. Thomas Royal’s women’s softball team.  They won the Inter-County title in the 1948-49 season. 

A private visitation for the immediate family (a mask or face covering is required) will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160), followed by a private graveside service at Elmdale Memorial Park.  Memorial donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada will be gratefully acknowledged.  Special thanks to the caring staff of Caressant Care Mary Bucke and the doctors’, nurses, and staff on 5^th floor at the STEGH.
