I am so sorry for your loss. Don was a man that I remember as always having a minute to talk about any subject and I admired his ability to say so much with so few words. He was a great friend of my father Louis and gave his life generously to better so many things....so many people....and so many places. Rest in Peace Don, you're in a beautiful place. Sending strength and support to Josie, Mark and the whole family, and close friends as well.

My sincere condolences to Lynda and Family .I had a wonderful visit with "Cose" the last time I was in St Thomas. Always a Book of Knowledge he was and a great friend to George and I all through school. I'm sad as it seems like the end of a tight generation.
Thinking of You from Vancouver Island.............Hugs from Roberta..........xxoo

Dear Mark and family,
So very sorry to learn of your Dad’s death.
Don was a fount of knowledge about all things Elgin County and St. Thomas and had an inexhaustible memory of an interest in all things historical.
I remember him as a competent Assitant Registrar and a very funny guy at work, in circumstances that could often be pretty stressful for us lawyers. Everybody liked and admired him.
The same goes for the auctions. Don was ever helpful in these circumstances and a really good auctioneer. He seemed to always know the family histories of the subject of auction, whether it be furniture or figurines. Many of us who lived in St. Thomas at the time, never missed Don’s auctions, whether we were buying, selling or just there because it was a great opportunity to meet friends. I hope you are enjoying continuing the tradition.
Please convey my thoughts to your Mom, whom we all also knew very well, from her highly competent title searches to our social meetings back in the day.
I am thinking of you and your family at this difficult time
Best
Don

My sympathy to the Cosens family. I first met Don when he became a member of the Irish Benevolent Society. He was a very active member. He had an amazing knowledge of local history, a good sense of humour. I always enjoyed speaking with him. May Don rest in Peace,

My heartfelt condolences to Mark, Lynda and Josie!
I first met Don and Lynda in 1974 through his great friend, and my cousin, Erie Coulter. Over the years, Don and I became fast friends, mostly through the pursuit of family genealogies and St Thomas history. He had a great mind, an amazing range of interests, and an abiding interest in his neighbors. His passing gives me great personal sadness and deprives Elgin County of a huge reservoir of history! I will miss you, Donald. My life has been much richer for having known you! God keep you in His care. Bill

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Don’s loved ones.
Don features in many of my early family memories. He was a great friend to my father, Michael Medcalf, who I know valued his companionship throughout his life, both in St. Thomas and beyond. I can recall many visits as a child to the Cosens’ residence with its twisty staircase and plush blue carpets following a visit to the beach at Port Stanley or my grandparents’ home in Union. As I grew older, I developed a friendship with Don and was impressed by his willingness to overlook the disparity in our ages and to treat me as an equal.
I have memories of Don that I am sure will last a lifetime. One such memory arose from the invitation that Don secured for me to a Christmas Party held by the Speaker of the Ontario Legislature at Queen’s Park while I was a student in Toronto. But above all, I will fondly remember Don for his gracious hospitality, his easy manner, and his commitment to his community and its history.
Rest in peace, Don. You will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Ian Medcalf
