Obituary of William "Bill" Shearer

SHEARER, William "Bill", of St. Thomas, passed away at his residence, Caressant Care on Bonnie Place on Friday, March 8, 2019, in his 90^th year.  Beloved husband for nearly 60 years to Vera “Ve” (née Cook) Shearer.  Dearly loved father of Jeannie Shearer (William Ward) of Port Stanley.  He was the proud grandfather of Andrew William Gillmore of London.  Dear brother of John Shearer (Ena) in Scotland, late Agnes “Ennis” Rankin (David of St. Thomas), and Jean McMurdo (late Ian) of St. Thomas.  Also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and their families.  Born in Glasgow, Scotland, August 2, 1929, Bill came to St. Thomas from Glasgow in 1958.  He was the son of the late William and Jeanie (née Brown) Shearer.  Bill was a retired manager at Wilson & Somerville Ltd., St. Thomas.  A long-time member of Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas where he was an Elder Emeritus, he formerly served in various capacities within the church.  A Past President of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas, Bill was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International.  He was a life member of Lodge Riddrie #1340, A.F. & A.M., Glasgow, Scotland and a member of the Hi-Ro Shrine Club of Elgin.  Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held in the Lyle Chapel of Knox Presbyterian Church, 55 Hincks St., St. Thomas on Saturday, March 23^rd at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall of Trinity Anglican Church.  In honour of Bill’s heritage, Scottish attire is encouraged.  Flowers respectfully declined.  Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society or Knox Presbyterian Church will be gratefully acknowledged.  Arrangements entrusted to the SIFTON FUNERAL HOME, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).
